Corals live between three to three-thousand meters deep into the seas around Japan, Taiwan, the Canary Islands, and the Mediterranean. They also inhabit the waters off the coasts of Tunisia, Algeria, Yugoslavia, and Turkey.

The most coveted type of Coral is deep red in color, but rare and exotic types of coral also exist in white, black, and electric blue.

For coral jewelry, only two types of coral species are used: Corallium rubrum and Corallium japonicum. Coral exists primarily in the warm waterbeds of the depths of the ocean, and secretes a calcareous substance that harden in branch-like structures off of the coral stems. These fragile coral branch deposits are then collected by deep-sea divers, who will sort them, clean them, and treat them before they are sold.

For many moons, it has been thought that wearing a coral amulet or emblem had the power to soothe tension and aid in seductive powers. The salmon-colored coral stone was particularly coveted throughout history, for its remarkable ability to remind one of the summer, sun, and the faraway seas.
